Sentence mechanics

  • Pick the right subject. The element that really matters most

  • If too much info, break to several sentences

  • Don’t use more than two time elements

  • Think of info the reader already know: don’t repeat it

  • Info the reader knows: use it to connect, to be meaningful and relevant

  • Don’t use vague words. Be specific (“impacts” is vague, may be positive or negative, doesn’t explain what)

  • Don’t repeat the same preposition in the same sentence

  • Don’t let the reader “Stay put” too much with backgrounders, “while” etc

  • Avoid cognitive load until the main point - prefer topic prominence

  • A modifier should be placed where it’s clear what it modifies, and that the modification makes sense
