While you write¶
Good focus on the topic, and how it relates to the discourse (or not, maybe new fact)
Pick the correct fronting structure, put the main payload at the end
Factual or irrealis?
Pick the correct irrealis realisation. What is the distance from the here and now? From the facts? Open? Remote? Mood?
Speaker or other viewpoint?
Pick the correct verb, the correct meaning
Modality
If relevant, improve to more concise structure that focuses on what’s important
Pace an argument, shift thematic weight
Stance
Precise hypothetical and counterfactual scenarios
When in doubt¶
Agreement (change where inflected verb is required)
Try the word in another sentence (can it be adjective in…)
For correct structure, if the website is not enough, better to consult CGEL Students introduction: clauses on chapters 10-14, coordinations on chapter 15, info package on chapter 16. Then find the example/rule that best fits what needed need.
