PIE aspectual worldview¶
PIE speakers cared about aspect, not tense
It really is one of the most paradigm-shifting realizations in linguistics:
PIE speakers cared deeply about action, but to them, how an event unfolds was fundamentally more important than when it occurred on a calendar.
To be clear, PIE speakers weren’t oblivious to time—they knew whether an ox died yesterday or would be slaughtered tomorrow.
But their grammar didn’t force them to anchor every single verb to a linear timeline.
Instead, the PIE verb was an aspectual lens.
Aspectual is not linear timeline¶
How vs. When
When modern English speakers hear a verb, our first question is usually “When?” (Past, Present, or Future).
When a Proto-Indo-European speaker heard a verb, their first question was “What is the internal contour of this action?”

Time wasn’t missing; it was an emergent property of aspect.
Note
You didn’t need a past tense tag if you were already using the Aorist (perfective) aspect, because a completed, bounded action is inherently behind you.
The ultimate example: PIE root *weid¶
Nothing illustrates this better than the famous PIE root *weid- (to see/look).
The way PIE built different stems from this single root shows how aspect naturally generated temporal meaning:
Imperfective stem (*weyd-e/o-): “To be in the procesd of looking / watching.”
Ongoing process >> present/durative
Aorist stem (*wid-): “To catch sight of / to spot.”
Single completed event >> past event, this yielded Ancient Greek eidon “I saw”)
Perfect stem (*woyd-e): “I have seen and now exist in the resulting state of having seen.”
What is the state of “having seen” something? knowing.
Note
That single stative form—*woyde (“I have seen / I know”)—survived across almost every Indo-European branch with that exact dual meaning:
Sanskrit: veda (“I know”)
Ancient Greek: oida (“I know”)
Gothic: wait (“I know”)
Old English: wāt (“I know” — the ancestor of archaic English to wit and wisdom)
Past-present-future tense is not the default¶
Tense dominant languages are an option*
We tend to assume that a strict Past–Present–Future tense system is the natural “default” for human language because Latin, English, and Romance languages trained us to see it that way.
In reality, tense-dominant systems are just one way to slice up human experience.
Important
PIE speakers lived in a world of processes, completion, and states - linear time was just the backdrop.
How daughter languages evolved¶
As the PIE dialect continuum fragmented (roughly 3000–1500 BCE), several daughter branches underwent a structural realignment.
The rigid PIE triad of aspectual stems began to collapse or reorganize into a linear chronological axis: Past, present, future.
To fill this newly emerging “Future Tense” slot, different daughter branches independently recruited existing PIE modal and desiderative building blocks.

This explains a long-standing puzzle in historical linguistics: why Latin, Greek, and Sanskrit all have synthetic future tenses, but build them using entirely different morphological machinery.
Ancient Greek¶
From PIE “want”.
Recycling the Desiderative Suffix. Ancient Greek developed its future tense (e.g., leípō “I leave” >> leípsō “I will leave”) primarily by grammaticalizing the PIE desiderative suffix *-s-, often combined with short-vowel aorist subjunctives.
Over generations, a form that originally meant “I want/intend to leave” semanticized into the default prediction “I will leave.”
Indo-Iranian¶
From PIE “aim, wish” (similar to want)
Indo-Iranian followed a similar path to Greek, taking the PIE desiderative marker and attaching a thematic suffix (*-s-ye/o-). In Vedic and Classical Sanskrit, this yielded forms like dāsyati (“he will give”), originating from a desiderative construction meaning “he aims/wishes to give.”
Latin¶
From PIE subjunctive or with auxiliary “become” (like “be”)
Latin accent stressed first syllables. It forced speakers to invent compound tenses, since final syllables and endings lost their energy and eroded.
To form future, Latin maintains two separate systems for future tense.
If the verb allows, future tense is the PIE subjunctive mood
If the verb does not allow (phonologically) to add the subjunctive suffix, an auxiliary was used for future tense.
Latin keeps “Imperfectum” and “Perfect” grammatical stems, each has past, present and future.
Proto-Germanic¶
Strict binary: Past (preterite) and non-past. Future is linked to modality.
While other PIE based languages synthesized their old modal machinery into inflectional future tenses, Proto-Germanic took a different evolutionary path.
Germanic abandoned the old PIE desiderative suffixes altogether.
It streamlined the verbal system into a strict binary: Past (Preterite) and Non-Past.
To express future time, Germanic relied on the Non-Past alongside context, or developed analytic (periphrastic) constructions using full modal verbs of obligation (shall) or volition (will).
Important
This strategy preserved the ancient cognitive link between the future and modality right down into modern English.
Present tense for future time¶
"Present tense" is the historical "non-past"
English never actually developed a true morphological future tense.
What we call the “present tense” is historically and structurally a non-past tense, which inherently covers both present and future time.
The use of the present tense in subordinate clauses (“If it rains”) is not a modern grammatical shortcut—it is a linguistic fossil. It preserves the original way Old English handled all future events.
The Germanic binary: past vs. non-past¶
Unlike Romance languages (which inherited a distinct future tense from Latin), Proto-Germanic only had two morphological tenses: Past and Non-Past.
In Old English, if you wanted to talk about tomorrow, you simply used the non-past (present) tense, often relying on context or adverbs to clarify the timeline:
I go to the market tomorrow
Under CGEL, this binary still governs modern English syntax. Verbs inflect for past (rained) and present/non-past (rains).
There is no inflected future form.
The rise of the modals¶
In main clauses: Will, Shall
As the language evolved, speakers needed a more precise way to express future prediction in main clauses without relying solely on context.
They began utilizing the Old English verb willan (meaning “to want” or “to desire”) and sculan (meaning “to owe” or “to be obliged”).
Over centuries, these verbs bleached of their original meanings and grammaticalized into the modal auxiliaries will and shall.
A main cause like:
It rains tomorrow
Gradually became:
It will rain tomorrow.
The modal auxiliary took over the job of projecting the main clause into the future.

Subordinate clauses¶
Adoption of will did not happen in subordinates
Subordinate clauses resisted the change.
While main clauses adopted “will”, subordinate clauses governed by conditional or temporal conjunctions (if, when, until, before, unless) firmly rejected it.
This happened due to the linguistic principle of structural economy:
Inherent Futurity¶
The conjunction “if” or “when” already acts as a temporal or hypothetical projector.
The moment a reader encounters “If…”, the entire following clause is instantly suspended in a hypothetical or future state.
Redundancy¶
Because the subordinator (if) has already established the unreality or futurity of the condition, adding the modal (will) is syntactically redundant.
Matrix Anchoring¶
The subordinate clause does not need to establish its own time frame because it inherits its temporal anchor from the main (matrix) clause.
If it rains, the match will be cancelled (the modal will in the main clause reaches back and covers the subordinate clause as well)
The Syntactic Division of Labor¶
By utilizing the non-past tense in the subordinate clause, English syntax achieves maximum efficiency.
The conjunction (if) establishes the condition
The default non-past tense (rains) establishes the action
The matrix clause establishes the final temporal reality (“is cancelled” or “will be cancelled”).
Adding will to the subordinate clause would be attempting to project a clause into the future that is already standing there:
If it will rain, the match will be canceled
