Relationship¶
Effective writing establishes a relationship between writer and reader.
If our writing doesn’t offer some glimpses of ourselves as personalities, it’s hard to say that our work has a style, much less that its style will appeal to readers
Each sentence gives us a glimpse of the way the writer thinks.
Establish a common sentiment, an atmosphere of sociability
Styles and the reader¶
Styles may indicate how we are trying to understand—and help our readers understand—things that are not known or not clear: suggesting, apparently, appearing etc
Styles help to present the writer us as individual consciousnesses, as personalities who process the information.
More tentatively than authoritatively, presented as possible comparisons, possible explanations.
Effective writers separate established facts from their personal interpretations and motivations, using the appropriate style to communicate their intent to the reader.
